Possibly
considered
as
one
of
the
most
beautiful
and
complex
legendary
symbols
that
has
transcended
over
time,
as
a
Chalice
from
the
Christian
era and as a Grail in chivalric literature to the present day.
An eminently Christian symbol, representing the cup used to contain the
wine
in
the
Holy
Supper
(Mk
14:23),
and
the
wine
in
the
celebration
of
the
Eucharist
which
through
transubstantiation
(Council
of
Trent
1545),
transforms
with
the
Blood
of
Christ.
It
also
represents
the
cup
in
which
Joseph
of
Arimathea
collected
the
blood
of
Jesus
at
the
crucifixion,
and
which
later
in
chivalric
literature
from
the
Middle
Ages
to
the
present
day
becomes as Holy Grail.
The
symbolism
of
the
chalice
with
the
Host
is
an
attribute
of
the
Eucharist;
the
chalice
with
a
coiled
serpent
is
an
attribute
of
the
apostle
St.
John;
the
chalice
with
a
closed
book
refers
to
Saints
John
Chrysostom
and
Bonaventure;
with
a
closed
book
and
a
stole
in
the
priestly
order
and
the
chalice
with
the
bread
in
Melchizedek
(Gen
14:
17-20).
In
chivalrous
Iconography
the
cup
of
Joseph
of
Arimathea
turned
into
the
Holy
Grail
was
properly
a
supernatural
object,
and
its
main
virtues
are
that
it
gave
enlightenment
and
eternal
life
to
those
who
drank
from
it.
The
true
symbolism
of
the
Grail
is
twofold,
its
own
virtues
and
its
search,
which
forces
us
to
endow
ourselves
with
highly
spiritual
conditions of inner life.
Worldly
life
and
desires
divert
attention
and
prevent
recognition
of
the
right
path.
This
blindness
to
the
spirit
makes
one
pay
more
attention
to
the
material
realities
of
research
than
to
the
spiritual
conditions
that
are
required.
This
inaccessible
search
for
the
Grail
symbolizes
the
constant
longing
to
draw
closer
to
the
Creator
and
the
final
Understanding,
something
that
is
never
done
with
a
spear
like
the
medieval
knights,
but
with a radical transformation of mind and heart.
A
modern
controversy,
older
than
the
book
"The
Da
Vinci
Code"
by
Dan
Brown
popularized
by
him,
is
the
French
theory,
that
by
calling
them
the
Holy
Grail
as
Holy
Grail,
moving
the
G
becomes
in
French:
“Sang
Real”
(Royal
Blood),
referring
to
a
supposed
descent
of
Jesus
with
Mary
Magdalene,
and
which
in
principle
seems
nothing
more
than
a
literary
curiosity.
